What is low sex drive?

Sex drive is a subjective term used to describe a person’s sexual desire.  It is not quantifiable and there is no “appropriate level”. In fact, a person’s sex drive will vary from individual to individual. For example, it is normal for person A to have a higher or lower sex drive than person B.  However, a person is said to have “low sex drive” when there is persistent decrease or lack of interest in sexual relations in comparison to their baseline.

Signs and symptoms of low sex drive

Cause

Treatment

Hormone Deficiencies (confirm levels)

·Treatment of physical discomfort within the vagina

·Deficiency in testosterone and estrogen resulting in pain during intercourse and   decreased sex drive

·Lubricants or estrogen creams/gels

·Supplemental testosterone and estrogen.

Estrogen: improves vaginal atrophy, hot flashes, and mood.

Testosterone: enhances sexual desire

Pregnancy

·Educate patient that it is normal for sex drive to vary throughout pregnancy as a result of fluctuating hormone levels. Treatment is not necessary. Some women report decreased sex drive during the 1st and 3rd trimester and normal/enhanced sex drive during the 2nd trimester. Reassure patient that sex drive will return to normal within weeks of delivery.
